From the Chief Health Officer's Desk
A new year is upon us. If your goals include combating the winter blues or increasing your physical activity, you can visit the newly launched MiVideo library for free physical activity classes you can do on your own time. Many employees take advantage of U-M’s recreation and wellness centers, which include access to cardiovascular and strength training equipment and classes.
It is not too late to get your flu or COVID-19 vaccinations. We are seeing an increase in respiratory illnesses in our community right now so do not delay receiving these important protections. There is no copay for U-M health plan members when you receive these vaccines at a network provider or retail pharmacy. As a reminder, if you test positive for COVID-19, OHS offers guidance on what to do.

Active U Starts Jan. 22
Get moving, challenge yourself and earn your Active U T-shirt! Register now for MHealthy's 12-week physical activity challenge and get moving with the entire U-M community this winter. Those who successfully complete the program also qualify for a 2024 Active U T-shirt!
Active U is for every fitness and ability level. Sign up as an individual, join a team or create a team. Tracking starts Jan. 22. Register by Feb. 5.

Get Your MHealthy Rewards
Find your way to well-being with MHealthy Rewards. Complete the confidential health questionnaire (HQ) and set a goal on the MHealthy Portal to earn a $75 reward!
Take the HQ to learn about your current health and get a personalized list of programs and resources. Start creating a healthy habit by setting a well-being goal. MHealthy Rewards is open to active, benefits-eligible faculty and staff.

Register for Backup Child Care
Kids Kare at Home is a resource to help with occasional child care needs. For example, when your care provider schedules a day off, but you must be on campus or at work, a Kids Kare caregiver may be available to provide backup child care in your home.
Registration is free and required to use the service. There is an hourly sliding-scale fee for up to 48 hours of care per year for families who qualify based on total household income.

Commit to a Damp/Dry January
Each year, millions take part in Dry January and commit to abstain from alcohol for 31 days. It's an opportunity to discover your attitudes and behaviors when it comes to alcohol consumption and notice the positives of not drinking.
It’s not too late to commit to an alcohol-free month. This article includes tips to get started and MHealthy’s Alcohol Management Program has compiled university resources, apps, books and more to help you along the way.

February is American Heart Month
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. High blood pressure increases your risk for heart disease and stroke.
Fortunately, up to 80% of heart disease is preventable, and there are many things you can do to reduce your risk. The university offers programs and resources to help raise your awareness and improve your heart health.

Thinking About Quitting Tobacco Virtual Workshop, Feb. 8
If you're thinking about quitting but aren't sure how to start, attend this new virtual workshop from the Tobacco Consultation Service. Meet a tobacco treatment specialist and learn about tools and resources available when you are ready to take the first step. Sign up for the Feb. 8 (12 – 1 p.m.) workshop.

MHealthy Physical Activity Library
Get moving with MHealthy from the comfort of your own space, at a time that works best for you! Access physical activity videos on the MHealthy Physical Activity Library on MiVideo. These videos are available to the entire U-M community and include dozens of classes covering strength, cardio, yoga, Zumba and more!

Free Virtual Cooking Classes
Registration is open for February cooking classes. Classes focus on creating heart healthy dishes and desserts using bright beets and delicious dark chocolate. You'll also get tips for saving time and cutting costs. Register for one or both classes. You can also sign up to be notified when registration opens for future classes.

Nourish Your Whole Self
Based on the concept of intuitive eating, this free 12-week program helps you tune into yourself to make choices that support you feeling nourished. MHealthy coaches offer guidance on eating mindfully, being kind to yourself and being thankful for your body. Registration reopens Feb. 12. Sign up to be notified.

MHEALTHY RESEARCH
Kristi Rahrig Jenkins, PhD, MHealthy's Research Program Manager, presented at the 2023 HERO Forum as part of a research panel called, "Hot Off the Press: Putting Cutting-Edge Health and Well-Being Research into Practice." She shared findings from her recent paper, "Employee sources of stress and their association with absenteeism: Differences by wage category."
